Summer of Code Results: XML command-line utilities
This summer I mentored Nhat Minh Lê's project, XML Command-Line Utilities for NetBSD. Here is my summary of the project goals and results.
The main idea of the project was to bring the UNIX text-processing idiom to XML, helping users to employ pipelines, elementary filters, and shell scripts in XML processing tasks.

EuroBSDCon 2009 - Cambridge, UK
The 8th EuroBSD Con was held at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom on 18 - 20 September 2009. This year four NetBSD Developers Alistair Crooks, Adam Hamsik, Joerg Sonnenberger and Arnaud Ysmal presented a range of topics including Role Based Access Control, Journaling FFS, NetBSD LVM, The pkgsrc wrapper framework, A BSD licensed PGP library, and fs-utils: File systems access tools in userland. Summer of Code results: Efficient Wide-Character Regular Expressions

NetBSD developer summit in Cambridge/UK
On Friday, the 18th of September, a group of NetBSD developers from all over the world met during a developer summit at the Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge/UK. It provided a great opportunity for developers to meet each other in person, to share ideas and to talk about ongoing and future projects.
The summit was organised by Stephen Borrill and sponsored by Precedence Technologies, a Cambridge based company selling NetBSD based products.
Based on a presentation by Alistair Crooks the roadmap for NetBSD 6.0 was discussed. Here are some of the highlights that are planned for NetBSD 6.0:

- POSIX shared memory
- processor & cache aware scheduler
- Networking:
- Mobile IPv6
- SCTP
- netboot from HTTP
- Storage:
- LVM
- ZFS
- iSCSI initiator

- Gaols via kauth (similar to FreeBSD jails)

Around 00:00 UTC on 2009-09-25, nyftp.netbsd.org will be offline for an unknown interval of time due to the emergency replacement of a chiller and other air conditioning equipment at the location where it is hosted. blog.NetBSD.org was not very available between ~13:00 and ~20:00 UTC today. One of its disks semi-failed and led to really exhaustive retries that left the httpds so exhausted they timed nearly everybody out instead. Now that NetBSD/sparc switched to wscons in -current it can finally run the Xorg Xserver out of the box. This means we will support accelerated graphics in X and the kernel console on a lot more hardware than before with Xsun and friends, many with acceleration and in 24 bit colour if the hardware supports it.

Postfix 2.6.5, the latest stable version of the popular mail transport agent, was imported into NetBSD-current today. The following bugs have been fixed since version 2.6.2:- The Postfix Milter client got out of step with a Milter application after the application sent a "quarantine" request at end-of-message time. The Milter application would still be in the end-of-message state, while Postfix would already be working on the next SMTP event, typically, QUIT or MAIL FROM. In the latter case, Milter responses for the previously-received email message would be applied towards the next MAIL FROM transaction. This problem was diagnosed with help from Alban Deniz.
- The Postfix SMTP server would abort with an "unexpected lookup table" error when an SMTPD policy server was mis-configured in a particular way.
FOSSLC's debate with David Maxwell

On 31 August 2009 our very own David Maxwell is taking part in the Free and Open Source Software Learning Centre's debate 'Which open source license is best?'. Obviously, David is advocating for the BSD License. His opponents are Mike Milinkovich (for EPL License) and Matt Asay (for GPL License).
